Porcellionides pruinosus 'Powder Blue' – The lightning-fast, silver-blue cleanup crew!

Are you looking for a very active, robust, and useful inhabitant for your terrarium or paludarium? The Porcellionides pruinosus 'Powder Blue' (also known as the Powder Blue woodlouse) is an absolute favorite in the isopod hobby. Like their well-known variant, the Powder Orange, these creatures stand out due to their beautiful dusty, 'powdered' texture, which gives them a subtle silver to metallic blue-grey sheen.

Little rockets full of energy

With an adult length of over 1 cm, 'Powder Blues' are medium-sized but incredibly agile isopods. They are known for always being on the move. While many species of woodlice primarily stay deep beneath the substrate, these active 'rockets' regularly show themselves on the ground, on driftwood, and among the leaf litter.

Indispensable bioactive cleaning crew

In a natural terrarium, they play a crucial role as a cleaning crew. They are hungry, eat almost anything, and clean up dead leaves (beech and oak), decaying wood, molds, vegetable scraps, and droppings at a rapid pace. Because they reproduce extremely quickly once settled, they form a stable population in a short time that keeps the soil of your terrarium healthy.

Care & Housing

Porcellionides pruinosus have very few demands on their environment, making them the perfect beginner's isopod:

  • Housing: Since isopods cannot climb smooth glass, a glass terrarium or plastic breeding box is ideal. Use a nutritious substrate mix of cocopeat, humus, leaf litter, and pieces of decomposed wood and bark.
  • Humidity & Temperature: A temperature between 21 °C and 25 °C is perfect. Keep 1 part of the enclosure moist (e.g., with sphagnum moss) and let the rest be a bit drier so they can find their ideal spot themselves.
  • Nutrition & Calcium: Provide plenty of leaf litter and wood. Supplement this with vegetables (such as cucumber or mushrooms), fish food, and a constant source of calcium (cuttlebone or cuttlebone powder) for a strong exoskeleton.

Key advantages at a glance:

  • Unique Color: Silvery to metallic blue-grey 'powder' matte finish.
  • Super Active: Fast-moving isopods that are very visible in the enclosure.
  • Top Cleaning Crew: Processes molds, organic waste, and food residues rapidly.
  • Fast Breeding & Robust Species: Great beginner species that reproduces effortlessly.
  • In-house Breeding Guarantee: Healthy young nymphs with a live arrival guarantee.
